Sophia Bush has spent nearly two decades saying very little about her brief marriage to her former One Tree Hill costar Chad Michael Murray. That changed on Wednesday, October 21, when the actress sat down with Alex Cooper on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast to talk about her upcoming memoir, And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress, and the chapter of her life fans have always been curious about.

Her message to her ex was surprisingly gentle. “What felt important to me [to include in the book] was to say, ‘We were kids,'” Bush said, according to Us Weekly. “We’re older. We’re all adults. We’re all parents. No harm, no foul. [I] wish you well.”

Why she almost left it out

Bush, 44, admitted she originally didn’t want to write about the marriage at all. She explained that sharing your story is different when you’re already famous, because readers come to it with opinions already formed.

Her editor had a blunt response, she recalled: “I hate to break it to you: Google exists.” In other words, the marriage was too public to skip, so she chose to tell it in her own words.

A fairy tale with red flags

Bush and Murray, now 45, met on the set of The WB’s One Tree Hill, where they played Brooke Davis and Lucas Scott. They married in 2005, were together for only five months and finalized their divorce the following year.

On the podcast, Bush said the start of the relationship “felt like a fairy tale,” but she now looks back on some warning signs differently. She described being covered in a rash from head to toe on her wedding day, joking that maybe it was a red flag rather than an allergic reaction.

She also reflected on how her intense work ethic, the ability to put in extremely long workweeks, was praised in her career while taking a toll on her personal life.

The rift with Hilarie Burton Morgan

One of the most talked-about parts of the conversation was Bush’s account of how the romance affected her friendship with castmate Hilarie Burton Morgan. Bush said Burton Morgan, who had worked with Murray before, warned her about dating him.

“It was good advice, and I just didn’t have the wherewithal or the experience [to understand],” Bush said, per Us Weekly. Looking back, she said, “She was right… I didn’t listen, she was right and that was it. I didn’t trust her.”

Bush also suggested that the distance between the two women was made worse by their former showrunner, Mark Schwahn, claiming he told each of them different falsehoods about the other. The two actresses repaired their friendship after the cast publicly accused Schwahn of harassment in 2017. Us Weekly notes that Schwahn has never publicly addressed those allegations.

Unexpected new friendships

According to People, Bush also revealed on the episode that she has since become friends with some of the women Murray allegedly cheated on her with. It was another sign of the no-hard-feelings tone she brought to the interview, which focused more on growth than on settling scores.

Where everyone is now

Both stars have long since moved on. Bush married Ashlyn Harris in 2025, while Murray wed Sarah Roemer in 2014, and the couple shares three children. Bush also mentioned her stepchildren from Harris’ first marriage when describing how everyone involved is now a parent.

When the memoir comes out

And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes from a Life in Progress arrives on Tuesday, October 27. Based on the “Call Her Daddy” preview, readers can expect a candid look at growing up in the spotlight, the One Tree Hill years and what Bush has learned about trust, work and healing since.

For One Tree Hill fans, the takeaway is a gracious one. Two decades later, Brooke Davis herself is wishing Lucas Scott well.
