Few things are more frustrating than watching your phone’s battery drop into the red before the day is over. The good news is that you do not need a new phone or a bulky power bank to get more life out of the one you have. A few setting changes and smarter habits can make a noticeable difference.

Here are practical battery hacks that work on most modern iPhones and Android phones. Menu names vary between models, but the ideas are the same.

1. Find out what is draining your battery

Start by checking the battery usage screen in your phone’s settings. It shows which apps have used the most power over the last day or so. You may find that one app, such as a game, social media app or navigation tool, is responsible for much of the drain. Once you know the culprit, you can limit it, close it when you are done or check its settings.

2. Turn down the screen

The display is usually one of the biggest power users. Lower the brightness, turn on automatic brightness and shorten the screen timeout so the display turns off sooner when you are not using it. If your phone has an OLED screen, using dark mode can also help, since dark pixels need less power.

3. Use low power or battery saver mode

Both iPhone and Android have a low power or battery saver mode that cuts back on background activity, visual effects and other power-hungry features. You do not have to wait until the battery is nearly empty. Turning it on earlier on a long day can stretch your charge noticeably.

4. Tame background activity

Many apps refresh content, check locations and sync data in the background, even when you are not using them. Review your settings and:

  • Turn off background refresh for apps that do not need it.
  • Limit location access to “while using the app” instead of “always”.
  • Turn off notifications from apps you rarely care about, since each alert wakes the screen.

5. Watch your connections

Your phone works harder to stay connected when the signal is weak. In areas with poor coverage, such as basements, trains or rural spots, the battery can drain faster. When you have a reliable Wi-Fi connection, use it. If you are somewhere with no signal and do not need your phone, airplane mode can save a lot of power.

6. Keep your phone cool

Heat is bad for batteries. Avoid leaving your phone in a hot car, in direct sunlight or under a pillow while charging. If your phone gets hot while charging, removing a thick case can help it cool down. Extreme cold can also cause the battery to drain faster temporarily, so keep your phone in an inside pocket on freezing days.

7. Charge smarter for long-term health

Battery capacity naturally declines over time, but your habits can slow that process. Many phones now have optimised or adaptive charging features that learn your routine and avoid keeping the battery at 100% for long periods. Turn these features on if your phone offers them.

It also helps to avoid regularly running the battery all the way down to zero. Topping up during the day is perfectly fine for modern lithium-ion batteries.

8. Keep your software updated

Phone makers often include battery and performance improvements in software updates. Keeping your operating system and apps up to date can fix bugs that cause unusual battery drain.

9. Use quality chargers and cables

Cheap, uncertified chargers and cables can charge slowly or inconsistently and may not be safe. Stick with the charger that came with your phone or reputable certified accessories.

10. Know when it is time for a new battery

If your phone still drains quickly after all these changes, the battery may simply be worn out. Many phones show battery health in the settings. If it is significantly degraded, a battery replacement from an authorised repair service can make an older phone feel new again and is usually much cheaper than buying a new device.

The bottom line

You do not need to give up on your phone to make it through the day. Check what is draining power, dim the screen, limit background activity, keep the phone cool and use smart charging features. A few minutes spent on settings today can mean fewer low-battery panics tomorrow.
