British TV and Hollywood streaming are getting a little closer. Channel 4 and The Walt Disney Company have announced a deal that will put a Channel 4 service inside Disney+ in the UK and Ireland from early 2027, including the broadcaster’s main live channel and new shows released on the same day they air.
Here is what the agreement covers, based on the official Channel 4 announcement and reporting from Deadline.
What Disney+ subscribers will get
According to the announcement, Disney+ customers in the UK and Ireland will be able to watch:
- Channel 4’s main linear TV channel in HD
- Hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted shows from Channel 4’s on-demand catalogue, from “Big Mood” and “Tip Toe” to “24 Hours in A&E”
- Multiple new Channel 4 shows each year released “day and date,” meaning they arrive on Disney+ at the same time as on Channel 4’s own platforms
All of it comes at no extra cost as part of an existing Disney+ subscription. Channel 4 will appear in its own branded section inside the app, using the same navigation as the rest of Disney+.
The first shows announced
Three titles were named as initial day-and-date releases:
- Maya, a darkly comic thriller about a mother and daughter in witness protection, led by Bella Ramsey, with Daisy Haggard writing, directing and starring
- Stepping Up, a comedy about an over-enthusiastic stepdad bringing chaos to his new blended family, led by Denise Welch
- Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, the reality format in which famous faces are pushed through brutal selection tests by ex-special forces instructors
Further details on launch timing and the full content lineup will be confirmed later, the companies said.
What both sides are saying
Channel 4 chief executive Priya Dogra called the deal a way “to give audiences even more ways to discover and enjoy Channel 4’s brilliant shows,” and said it shows how collaboration between broadcasters and streamers can create more choice.
Adam Smith, chairman of direct-to-consumer at Disney Entertainment, said local broadcaster partnerships are “very important” as Disney+ builds its libraries, and described the agreement as the latest example of Disney’s strategy of pairing local programming with a global platform. Channel 4 described it as one of the most significant local content deals Disney+ has signed anywhere.
Why this deal matters
For years, British public service broadcasters and global streamers were framed as rivals competing for the same evening viewers. This agreement points to a different model: the broadcaster keeps its brand and its own platforms, while reaching subscribers who might never open the Channel 4 app.
For Channel 4, which relies on advertising rather than a licence fee, the upside is reach. Younger audiences increasingly start their viewing inside big streaming apps, so being one tap away inside Disney+ could put its shows in front of new eyes.
For Disney+, the benefit is distinctively local content. British comedy, reality and documentary programming has a loyal audience, and live channel access adds something streaming services often lack: a reason to check in every day.
Questions still to answer
The announcement leaves some practical details open, including the exact launch date, how advertising will work within the Channel 4 section, and which back-catalogue titles will be included at launch. Viewers outside the UK and Ireland should not expect the Channel 4 section to appear in their version of Disney+, since the deal covers only those two markets.
The bottom line
Starting in early 2027, Disney+ subscribers in the UK and Ireland will be able to watch Channel 4 live and catch new shows like “Maya” on day one without leaving the app. It is a notable test of whether broadcasters and streamers do better as partners than as rivals, and other broadcasters will be watching closely.
