One of Hollywood’s most closely watched creative couples is officially calling it quits. Actress Margaret Qualley and musician and producer Jack Antonoff jointly filed for divorce on Friday, October 30, according to New York Supreme Court records obtained by USA TODAY.
The filing comes nearly three years after the pair married on the New Jersey shore, and several months after reports first surfaced that they had separated.
What we know about the filing
According to USA TODAY, Qualley, 32, and Antonoff, 43, filed jointly in New York. No details about the terms of the divorce have been made public, and neither has issued a new public statement about the filing itself.
A joint filing is often a sign that a couple is approaching the end of a marriage cooperatively, though the specifics of any agreement are private.
The road to this point
The news did not come entirely out of the blue. USA TODAY notes that People reported on July 8 that the two had decided to separate.
Two days later, Qualley’s representative issued a statement pushing back on what it called “narratives running in the press” about “trust issues” and “infidelity” in the marriage. “They have deep love and care for one another,” the statement said. “There are only two people in this marriage, and the sources who are talking to the press and commenting on their relationship are not people who know them. Please respect their privacy.”
Antonoff also appeared to acknowledge the situation on stage. At a September 15 concert in West Hollywood, a fan in the crowd suggested the Bleachers song “Let’s Get Married,” from the band’s 2017 album “Gone Now.” According to USA TODAY, Antonoff replied, “Absolutely not. Read the news, brother,” before softening and adding, “I love that song. I wrote it, like, 11 years ago.”
A romance that played out in music
The couple met in 2021 at a party and were later seen on a date in Brooklyn, USA TODAY reports. Two years later they married in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, at a ceremony that included Antonoff’s longtime collaborators Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey.
While the pair kept much of their relationship private, it found its way into music. Antonoff wrote about his feelings through Bleachers, and he featured on Lana Del Rey’s 2023 love song “Margaret,” which includes the line “when you know, you know” about falling in love.
Del Rey herself has spoken about the couple. At Variety’s 2024 Hitmakers Brunch, she recalled how Antonoff looked at Qualley when they met and said he was “a big reason why I waited so long to get married and why I met my amazing husband.”
As recently as February, Qualley told Vanity Fair that she and Antonoff planned to have children, joking that if she had names picked out, she would not talk about it.
Two busy careers
Both stars are among the most in-demand names in their fields. Qualley, the daughter of actress Andie MacDowell, earned an Emmy nomination for the Netflix series “Maid” and starred in the hit body-horror film “The Substance.”
Antonoff is the frontman of Bleachers and one of pop’s most successful producers, with a long list of Grammy-winning work alongside artists including Taylor Swift and Lana Del Rey.
Wrapping up
The divorce filing closes a chapter that began with a whirlwind romance and a celebrity-filled wedding at the Jersey Shore. Both have asked for privacy in the past, and so far neither has said more publicly. As with any split, the most respectful takeaway is the one their own team offered months ago: only two people know what really happened in this marriage.
