Every Halloween has its standout costume, and this year the internet may have already found its winner. A video of a little boy trick-or-treating through New York City in a handmade bulldozer costume has gone viral, with strangers on stoops stopping mid-candy-handout to applaud.

According to Know Your Meme, the clip has picked up more than 8.1 million views on Instagram and 1.1 million on TikTok over just a few days.

The costume

The video was posted by Shirin Ahmed, a New York City-based doctor, mom and content creator who shares her life balancing motherhood and medicine. She built the costume for her 2-year-old son, and it is impressively detailed:

  • A yellow bulldozer body surrounding the child, with a painted Caterpillar-style logo
  • Fake tires on the sides
  • Little controls in front, so he looks like he is driving it
  • A working front bucket that, as one onlooker pointed out, can catch candy
  • An orange safety vest and a yellow hard hat to complete the construction-worker look

“It took me 3 days to make this costume with my 2YO son, but 100000% worth it,” Ahmed wrote in her caption.

The reactions are the best part

What turned a cute costume into a viral hit was the reaction of New Yorkers along the route. As the boy walks down leaf-covered sidewalks past decorated stoops, adults and kids alike lose it.

“I’m a bulldozer!” the boy announces to one passerby. “You win, you win!” the man replies.

At one house, a man handing out candy calls it an “A+ homemade costume.” Another onlooker notices the bucket: “Oh, it catches candy too!” One woman asks if she can take a photo, while a group on another stoop declares it “the best costume we’ve seen all night.” One girl simply says, “I’m going to lose my mind!”

Even Caterpillar’s official Instagram account showed up in the comments, Know Your Meme reported.

Why this one hit so hard

There are a few reasons this video spread so quickly:

  • It is wholesome. In a feed full of arguments and bad news, a toddler proudly announcing “I’m a bulldozer!” is a welcome break.
  • Homemade beats store-bought. Commenters praised the effort that went into the costume, and many shared photos of costumes they had made for their own kids.
  • The crowd is the punchline. Every cut to a new stoop delivers another genuine, delighted reaction, which makes the video endlessly rewatchable.
  • Kids love construction vehicles. Any parent of a toddler knows the power of a big yellow digger.

Ahmed’s first big viral moment

Know Your Meme noted that while Ahmed had shared plenty of family moments online before, this was her first major viral success. Her caption on the video poses the question every parent who goes all-out on Halloween eventually faces: “How am I going to top this?” She even invited followers to comment with suggestions for next year.

Want to try a homemade costume?

If the video has inspired you, cardboard ride-in costumes are a classic DIY project. Start with a box that fits around your child’s waist, add shoulder straps, use paper plates for wheels and paint it in bold colors. Keep it light, make sure your child can see their feet and walk safely, and add reflective tape for evening trick-or-treating.

The bottom line

Halloween is still a few days away, but one tiny construction worker in New York has already set the bar. Millions of viewers agree with the man on the sidewalk: this kid wins.
