A hotel housekeeper discovered more than a dozen weapons and over 1,000 rounds of ammunition in a Denver hotel room that police feared were going to be used for a potential mass shooting during the 2021 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, according to a Denver7 report—the second time in a week that a hotel worker thwarted a possible mass shooting in the US.

Key Facts

Citing law enforcement sources connected with the investigation, the local news outlet reported a maid working at the Maven Hotel in downtown Denver—about two blocks from Coors Field, where MLB festivities kicked off this weekend—tipped off police after finding a hoard of weapons in one of the rooms on Friday night.

Among the items later removed by authorities from the eighth-floor room were 16 long guns, body armor and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, according to the report.

The sources told Denver 7 that because of the amount of weapons, the vantage point of the hotel room and the crowds gathering nearby for the July 13 MLB game, police feared there were plans for a “Las Vegas style shooting,” referencing the 2017 massacre of over 60 people at a Nevada music festival where the shooter fired rounds from the 32nd floor of a nearby hotel.

The Denver Police Department said in a statement released Saturday that three men and one woman were arrested in connection to the hotel discovery on Friday night: 42-year-old Richard Platt, 48-year-old Gabriel Rodriguez, 44-year-old Ricardo Rodriguez and 43-year-old Kanoelehua Serikawa.

The police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes, but said in its latest statement that the investigation is active and ongoing.

Key Background

The feared mass shooting in Denver comes less than a week after an alert from different housekeeper at a hotel in Chicago possibly thwarted what police acknowledged may been another planned shooting. A member of the cleaning staff at the W Chicago – Lake Shore, a prominent lakefront Chicago hotel, alerted police after finding a semi-automatic rifle with a high powered scope and laser left “in a very suspicious position” on July 4. Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown later told reporters the incident was “obviously very concerning, considering the position of the W Hotel to Navy Pier,” where spectators crowded to watch the Independence Day fireworks.
