Manchester United fans have hit-back following Danny Mills’ controversial combined XI.
The former Manchester City full-back was given the task of selecting an XI made-up of Liverpool and United players on Sky Sports News earlier today, ahead of the two meeting at Old Trafford this weekend.
Mills opted for Alisson in goal with the Brazilian hopeful of being fit enough to return at Old Trafford, while in defence he went for Joel Matip over United’s Harry Maguire.
Explaining his Reds defence selection, he said: “At the start of the season and no-one had played, I would have gone for Harry Maguire.
“But because he’s not been in fantastic form and the partnership that Joel Matip now has with Virgil Van Dijk, I am going to put him in. His performances and partnership with Virgil warrants a place ahead of Maguire at the moment.”
And there were no United players in his midfield despite the likes of £89million World Cup winner Paul Pogba being available again.
“It’s all Liverpool in midfield, there is nobody in that United side who has reached a consistent level that they deserve to be in that midfield,” he explained.
“They are not going to be in that three but even if they weren’t available, James Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain before the United players.
“People say that Paul Pogba could get in there and if he’s playing well then yes but he hasn’t done that this season.
“And there is no surprise with the attack. They have been exceptional. They have just won eight straight games in the league with Man United half-way down the table. It goes to show the gulf between the two at the moment.”
Mills’ combined Man United/Liverpool XI in full: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino,Mane.
But United fans have now hit-back over the former England man’s call not to include any Reds stars in his side, with most claiming Pogba should be in over Jordan Henderson, while a few have also made a case for Maguire to be included in defence.
And below is a round-up of the best reaction from social media.
Manchester United take on Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon with Jurgen Klopp’s side currently eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
