Female Italian fighter pilot, 23, who was kicked out of the country’s air force after complaining that she had been brutally ‘hazed’ and bullied joins Ukrainian resistance

An Italian fighter pilot who was kicked out of her country’s air force after complaining that she’d been brutally ‘hazed’ and bullied has now joined the Ukrainian resistance.

Giulia Schiff made headlines two years ago when footage emerged of her being injured by colleagues in an initiation prank.

The 23-year-old took eight sergeants to court for pounding her head against the wing of a plane, whipping her on the backside, before throwing her into a swimming pool during the ‘hazing’ ritual.

Schiff was axed from the air force after complaining about the prank – although her military bosses claimed she was expelled for ‘insufficient military aptitude’.

Her wrongful dismissal case was then taken to Italy’s highest administrative court but she lost.

Now, the Venice-born cadet has joined Ukrainian special forces in their fight against the Russian invasion, according to TV show Le Iene.

Schiff has been in Kyiv since the start of the war and is filming her mission as a mini-documentary for the satirical and investigative reporting programme.

Sources close to the show said: ‘She has never given up.’

Italian air force cadet Giulia Schiff was lifted by her legs during the ‘hazing’ ritual in the Italian air force which has led to a protracted legal battle

The footage showed Giulia having her head pounded against the wing of a plane, months after she enlisted as a trainee in the Italian air force

The so-called ‘baptism of flight’ ended with her being dumped in a pool (pictured) and caused uproar when footage of it emerged

According to Corriere della Sera, Giulia had enlisted as a cadet three months before the ‘hazing’ incident was filmed in April 2018 after coming fourth out of nearly 2,000 applicants.

The footage showed her being lifted and hit on the backside by her colleagues and her head being smashed against a plane wing before she is dumped in a pool.

However, the military academy said the ‘pool dive is an old-fashioned act that traditionally concludes the training course’.

Schiff claims she was made into a ‘black sheep’ after complaining about the ritual, before she was expelled later in 2018 for alleged indiscipline.

One general said that she lacked the ‘discipline, obedience… and sacrifice necessary to undertake a military career,’ Italian media said.
