Thanksgiving and the December holidays are just weeks away, and that means crowded airports, packed car trunks and the annual battle with an overstuffed suitcase. A few smart packing habits can make the whole trip easier, from the night before you leave to the moment you unpack.

Here are 10 simple hacks for lighter bags and smoother holiday travel.

1. Start with a reusable packing list

Keep a master packing list on your phone and reuse it every trip. Add categories such as clothes, toiletries, chargers, documents and gifts. After each trip, delete what you didn’t use and add what you forgot. Within a couple of trips, you will have a list that fits your life perfectly.

2. Plan outfits, not items

Lay out complete outfits for each day instead of grabbing random pieces. Choose a simple color palette so tops, bottoms and layers all mix and match. Most people find they can drop several items once they see their actual outfits side by side.

3. Roll, fold or use packing cubes

Rolling soft items such as T-shirts and leggings can save space and reduce deep creases. Folding works better for structured pieces. Packing cubes keep categories together, so you can grab what you need without unpacking everything. One cube per person also works well for family trips.

4. Wear your bulkiest items

Wear your heaviest shoes, coat and sweater on travel day instead of packing them. Your bag will be lighter and you will have extra warmth on chilly planes or train platforms.

5. Make a charger pouch

Put every cable, charger, adapter and power bank into one small pouch. It prevents the classic “Who has the phone charger?” panic. Before you leave any hotel or relative’s house, check that the pouch is full again.

6. Use a small bag for liquids, ready to go

If you are flying, keep travel-size toiletries in a clear bag that is always packed and refilled after each trip. Check your airline and airport security rules for current liquid limits before you go, since they can differ by country and airport.

7. Pack gifts the smart way

Wrapped gifts can be a hassle at airport security, because screeners may need to look inside. Consider packing gifts unwrapped and bringing gift bags, tissue paper or reusable fabric wraps to finish them when you arrive. Even better, ship larger gifts directly to your destination.

8. Keep a “first night” kit on top

Pack a small bag with pajamas, a change of clothes, medications, a toothbrush and chargers at the very top of your suitcase or in your carry-on. If you arrive late or your checked bag is delayed, you will still be able to sleep, wash up and get going the next morning.

9. Photograph your bag and its contents

Snap a quick photo of your suitcase and its contents before you leave. If a bag goes missing, those photos make describing it to the airline much easier. A distinctive luggage tag or a bright ribbon also helps you spot your bag on the carousel quickly.

10. Leave room for the trip home

Holidays usually mean coming home with more than you left with. Leave a little extra space, or pack a foldable tote that can become an extra carry-on for gifts and souvenirs on the return trip.

Bonus: a pre-departure checklist

Before you lock the door, run through a quick list:

  • ID, tickets and boarding passes
  • Medications and essential documents
  • Phone, wallet and keys
  • Chargers and power bank
  • Thermostat adjusted and appliances off
  • Trash taken out and perishables cleared from the fridge

The bottom line

Holiday travel does not have to be stressful. A reusable list, planned outfits and a few clever packing habits can lighten your load and make your trip run smoothly, so you can spend less time digging through your suitcase and more time with the people you are traveling to see.
