Controversy magnet Nick Kyrgios has ridiculed English singer-songwriter Sam Smith on Instagram for using the term ‘fisherthem’ instead of ‘fisherman’ in a recent TV interview.
The superstar entertainer changed their pronouns to they/them in 2019.
‘After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I’ve decided to embrace myself for who I am, inside and out,’ they said in an Instagram post at the time.
The non-binary pop star has attracted both praise and criticism for their extravagant and unique clothing choices since then, including their raunchy performance at the Brit Awards, which sparked more than 100 Ofcom complaints.

Smith appeared on The One Show on the BBC with Ronan Keating and said he would love to be a ‘fisherthem’
Speaking on The One Show with Ronan Keating recently, Smith said he would enjoy being a ‘fisherthem’.
Keating asked Smith: ‘You’re a big fan of fishing?’
‘I do love fishing, yes. Yeah, I’d love to be a fisherthem!’ Smith replied.
‘What, like a fly fisherman?’ Keating asked.
‘I’d be any type of fisherthem,’ Smith politely corrected him.
Kyrgios watched the vision and shared it on his Instagram stories with the caption: ‘This is so cringe bro I can’t’ followed by a laughing emoji.
Several celebrities have faced backlashes for misgendering Smith and mocking their gender identity in recent times.
Piers Morgan joined the debate by photoshopping his head onto Smith’s BRIT Awards outfit and writing, ‘Gender update: I’m now identifying as a complete berk.’
Oasis star Noel Gallagher referred to Smith as a ‘f***ing idiot’ during a radio interview, labeling them an ‘uncool’ pop star.
Sir Bob Geldof also repeatedly misgendered Smith during a TV interview, causing viewers to take to Twitter to demand an apology.

Good Morning Britain presenter Richard Madeley has since apologised for also misgendering the singer.
Smith recently spoke about their pronoun change, stating that it ‘felt like coming home’ and that they wish they had known the words earlier in life so they could have identified with them in school.
‘And it’s just so sad that we’re in 2023 and it’s still happening. It’s exhausting and especially in England,’ they said.
‘So we’ve got two sides, really. My personal life and then my public life. And in my personal life, there’s not one negative.’
