It was a spirited fight from Gateway United football club as the Ogun State outfit defeated Giant Brillars 1-0 on Saturday at the MKO Abiola Intl Stadium, Kuto Abeokuta in the season opener of the 2019/20 Nigeria National League season.
Under an intense sun in Abeokuta, Gateway United took the game to their visitors right from kickoff much to the delight of the home crowd.
It however took the 17th minute for Gateway Utd to register their first real effort on goal as a throw in fell to Adodo Stephen, chested in field but his effort was inches wide.
Oluwole Johnson met a corner from the left but could only head wide in the half hour mark as Gateway Utd pile more pressure on their visitor.
After a quick interchange of passes, Bakare Fatai somehow missed from a rather tight angle in what was the last action of the first half.
Just as the first half ended, Gateway United started the second half as such when Karamor Tubor tried to find the opener from way out but could only shoot wide.
Adodo Stephen had the ball at the back of the net for Gateway United but the assistant referee raised his flag for offside.
He was however not to be denied in the 85th minute as Adodo Stephen finally broke the deadlock when after a quick pass exchange in the area saw him smash home a right footed screamer. A gorgeous strike without a doubt.
There was to be no further goals as Gateway United started off the new campaign with a vital home win.
Gateway United will be away to Akajiobi FC in Imo state in their second game of the season.
