Ehlert, the managing partner for Windmill Golf Group, announced that he has been green-lighted to break ground early in 2021. His goal is to open the first LaunchPad Golf location at Mickelson National in late spring and to have Heritage Pointe ready by fall. Both will be open to the public.
“The technology components of what we’ll have will be revolutionary not only in Calgary but in Canada,” Ehlert told Postmedia. “Because nothing like this exists in Canada.”
According to the announcement, LaunchPad “will encompass 40 hitting stalls, soft seating adjacent to each stall along with tables for dining, expansive outdoor space, an open-style kitchen and full-service bar.” Artist renderings show two floors of hitting bays.
Ehlert will be installing the latest technology from Toptracer, which is owned by Topgolf and utilized at its 50-plus locations, and a heating system and retractable screen setup that will allow the two Calgary-area complexes to be open year-round.
With the current concerns about COVID-19, the planning has also included extra measures to separate each stall.
For Ehlert, this venture has been several years in the works. He believes that LaunchPad will appeal to a wide range of customers — from passionate pin-seekers to those who’ve never tried the sport, and of all ages.
“What I think is so exciting about this is it really blends the traditional components of golf, by having a golf club in your hands, and utilizes the technology advancements of today and combines them for an entertainment experience that is unlike anything else,” Ehlert said. “I know, from personal experience, the first time I went to a facility like this, it was in Dallas and this is going back 10 years or maybe even longer. I had heard about it, being in the golf industry, and I was on a golf junket and football trip with my dad and some friends, some business associates. My dad didn’t even want to go. He was about 65 at the time, and he said, ‘I don’t want to go this place. This isn’t golf.’
“But we decided to go as a group and he had a blast. He absolutely loved it. And now, anytime he’s in an area that has a facility like this, he’ll go. He’ll take grandkids.”
