Two of the NFL’s unbeaten teams went down on Sunday, October 25, the league played its first regular-season game in France and Baker Mayfield made a winning return. Here are the biggest takeaways from Week 7, based on reporting from The Guardian and ESPN’s NFL Nation via ABC7.
1. Seattle ends Kansas City’s perfect start
The Seattle Seahawks beat the Kansas City Chiefs 20-3, handing the Chiefs their first loss of the season. Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and a touchdown, and Sam Darnold threw for 257 yards and a score as Seattle (4-3) snapped a two-game skid.
The story was Seattle’s defence. Kenneth Walker III, last season’s Super Bowl MVP for the Seahawks before he signed with Kansas City, came in averaging a league-leading 133 rushing yards per game and was held to 36 yards on 14 carries against his old team. Patrick Mahomes threw for 165 yards and an interception, and the Chiefs (5-1) managed just 213 total yards. According to The Guardian, Seattle has now gone 36 games without allowing a 100-yard rusher, the longest active streak in the league.
One bright spot for Kansas City: Travis Kelce’s four catches moved him to 1,104 career receptions, past Marvin Harrison and Cris Carter into fifth place in NFL history.
2. The 49ers lose their unbeaten record too
Michael Penix Jr threw three touchdown passes and Atlanta turned four takeaways into 13 points in a 29-20 win over San Francisco, the 49ers’ first loss. Brock Purdy threw two interceptions, and Christian McCaffrey missed much of the first half with a thigh injury.
3. The Vikings keep winning ugly
Minnesota is now 6-0 after a 16-10 win over Indianapolis. The offence was quiet again, but linebacker Blake Cashman had 12 tackles and two sacks, and Harrison Smith sealed it with an interception. The Colts fell to 2-5.
4. History in Paris
The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the New Orleans Saints 16-10 in the NFL’s first regular-season game in France. Aaron Rodgers threw a touchdown pass, Jaylen Warren ran for 101 yards and Chris Boswell kicked three field goals as Pittsburgh (5-2) won its third straight. The Saints rushed for just 18 yards.
5. Mayfield returns, and the Bucs roll
Back from a dislocated right thumb, Baker Mayfield attempted only 11 passes, but Tampa Bay did not need more. Bucky Irving ran for 106 yards and two touchdowns, the Bucs piled up 258 rushing yards and forced four turnovers, and they hammered Carolina 43-13.
6. The Bengals flip the script in Baltimore
Baltimore led 13-0 at halftime, then Joe Burrow threw four second-half touchdown passes in a 35-13 Cincinnati win. With Lamar Jackson sidelined, the Ravens blew a double-digit second-half lead for the second week in a row.
7. Late kicks and overtime drama
- **Lions 20, Packers 17:** Jake Bates hit a 22-yard field goal as time expired, while Green Bay’s Trey Smack missed two kicks.
- **Browns 27, Titans 24:** Deshaun Watson led his fifth fourth-quarter game-winning drive of the season, setting up Andre Szmyt’s last-second field goal. Cleveland is 5-2.
- **Giants 27, Texans 21 (OT):** Devin Singletary’s 30-yard touchdown run won it in overtime, in JJ McCarthy’s first start of the season for New York.
8. Finally, a win for Miami
Malik Willis threw two touchdown passes and ran for another as the Dolphins beat the Jets 28-25 for their first win of the season, and the first for coach Jeff Hafley. Elsewhere, Denver beat Arizona 30-16 behind a 62-yard Bo Nix touchdown run, and the Rams beat the Raiders 35-21 as Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes.
The bottom line
The league’s last unbeaten teams are thinning out. Kansas City and San Francisco both took their first losses, leaving Minnesota as the clearest example of a team winning with defence. With the trade deadline approaching, Sunday’s results will shape a lot of decisions in the weeks ahead.
