If you have ever bought a third jar of cumin because you could not find the first two, you are not alone. The spice cabinet is one of the most chaotic corners of many kitchens. It is also one of the easiest to fix.
With about 20 minutes and a few simple hacks, you can make cooking faster, waste less and stop buying duplicates. Here is how.
1. Pull everything out at once
Start by emptying the cabinet or drawer completely. Spread everything on the counter. Seeing it all together is the fastest way to spot duplicates, near-empty jars and spices you forgot you owned.
Combine duplicates when it makes sense, and make a note of anything you are running low on.
2. Do the sniff test
Ground spices tend to lose flavor over time. Many cooks follow a simple rule: if a spice has faded in color or barely smells when you rub a pinch between your fingers, it has likely lost much of its punch.
Older spices are usually not a safety issue if stored properly, but they may not add much flavor. Replace the ones you use most and consider skipping the ones you rarely touch.
3. Group by how you cook
Alphabetical order works for some people, but grouping by use can be faster:
- Everyday basics: salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika
- Baking: cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, ginger
- Cuisine groups: for example, spices you use for tacos, curries or Italian dishes
- Rarely used: specialty spices you reach for a few times a year
Keep the everyday group in the easiest spot to reach.
4. Make labels visible
Jars stored in a drawer or deep cabinet are often impossible to identify from the side. Add labels to the lids so you can read them from above. A permanent marker on masking tape works fine, or use simple printed labels.
5. Go vertical with risers
In a cabinet, a tiered shelf riser lets you see the back rows without moving everything in front. A lazy Susan turntable is another easy win, especially in a corner cabinet.
6. Store spices away from heat
It is tempting to keep spices right next to the stove, but heat, light and moisture can make them lose flavor faster. A cool, dark cabinet or drawer away from the oven usually works better. Close lids tightly after each use.
7. Buy smaller amounts of rare spices
For spices you use only occasionally, buy smaller jars or packets when possible, or check whether a store sells spices in bulk so you can buy just a spoonful or two. You will waste less and keep flavors fresher.
8. Keep a running list
Tape a small list inside the cabinet door, or keep a note on your phone, and add spices as you run low. Before grocery shopping, check the list. This simple habit is the best defense against buying that third jar of cumin.
Bonus hack: create blend shortcuts
If you make the same dishes often, mix your own small batches of go-to blends, such as a taco seasoning or a favorite rub, and store them in labeled jars. It saves several steps every time you cook.
Keep it tidy
To keep the system working, put spices back in their zone after cooking and do a quick five-minute tidy once a month. A short refresh is much easier than another full reset.
Wrapping up
A spice cabinet reset is one of the fastest kitchen wins out there. Pull everything out, toss the tired jars, group by how you cook and label what you can see. In about 20 minutes, dinner prep gets a little faster and your shopping list gets a lot smarter.
